Wiener dogs take to the track for fellow canines

SPECIAL TO GET OUT

An unusual sport was inadvertently introduced in 1993 when Miller Lite beer released a commercial depicting ‘‘wiener dog drag racing.''
The comical beer campaign became reality: Wiener dog racing is popping up in cities across the country.

You can witness the unusual competition at the Wiener Dog Nationals trials, which will be held Friday at Phoenix Greyhound Park.

The fundraising event to benefit Arizona Adopt-a-Greyhound will be set up as a mock greyhound race, with 32 dachshunds scheduled to race in four heats around a miniature racetrack.

The top two finishers from each heat will advance to the finals, where the "wiener" will be announced.

The dachshund who is crowned champion will race in the national competition in San Diego.
