Now, if only they’d make some decent movies ... BEST LOCAL MUSIC VENUE The One Place 825 N. First St., Phoenix, (602) 541-3835 myspace.com/oneplacevenue One of the newest venues in the downtown arts district, The One Place is a nonprofit venue for local bands (like George Moshington, pictured) and up-and-coming touring bands. However, don’t plan to book your show on a Sunday, because The One Place doubles as a church.

Try Prism Theater instead of the strip club, and get some culture, too. BEST PLACE TO FEEL LIKE A KID AGAIN Amazing Jake’s Pizza Factory 1830 E. BEST ON-CAMPUS MAKE-OUT SPOT Hayden Library asu.edu/lib/libraries/hayden With several floors and various reading rooms, rows of shelves, staircases and bathrooms, you can certainly find a quiet spot for some serious lip-locking here. An adult wonderland of gambling, roller coasters, gaudy and imbecilic architecture, women of the night and more gambling awaits those who dare. BEST WEEKEND TRIP (UNDER 21) Rocky Point (aka Puerto Peñasco, Mexico) If you can see over the bar, you can order a drink at this fishing village-turned-spring break destination. Enjoy sandy beaches, firecrackers and beer all at once.
Peralta Trail End of Peralta Road, FS 77, Superstition Mountains Anyone who thinks the Arizona desert is a dry, dirty, boring place needs to hike this trail. It’s a beautiful trail with near constant photo-worthy vistas of the Superstition Mountains. BEST PLACE FOR WATER FUN Salt River Tubing 1320 N. Bush Highway, (480) 984-3305 saltrivertubing.com An ASU staple is tubing down the Salt River, which typically starts in May and runs into September. Start planning, folks, because it really is lots of fun. BEST RADIO STATION The Blaze (1260 AM) theblaze1260.com ASU’s student-run radio station is perhaps the only one that offers a true alternative — music and genres that the corporate entities ignore. Yeah, the signal’s weak, but you can listen live on the Web site. Full disclosure: While one of the writers worked for The Blaze, she didn’t get say over this category.
BEST LOCAL BAND What Laura Says Thinks and Feels myspace.com/whatlaurasaysthinksandfeels While the name might be hard to remember, you can’t soon forget this Tempe indie jam band. Playing up to five shows a week, the band creates a buzz with the originality to back it up. (Local spotlight) BEST PARTY SPOT 13th Street and Farmer Avenue, Tempe (Historic Tempe District) As more ASU students have started renting homes rather than apartments, this neighborhood hosts the best parties in historic homes with character, all within a short bike ride of each other. BEST PLACE TO DISPLAY YOUR ART Abandoned art store University Drive and Myrtle Avenue, Tempe “SAVE ART” is painted over this abandoned art store. More work is added consistently, turning the empty building into a silent protest against the corporate takeover of Tempe. BEST OPEN MIKE Poetry Slam at Mill’s End Café and Creperie 310 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, (480) 829-0755 A twist on the usual Mill Avenue open mike, this stellar coffee spot offers a poetry slam every Friday night for those who have something to say. BEST WORKOUT SANS WEIGHTS Climbmax Gym 1330 W. Auto Drive, Tempe, (480) 626-7755 climbmaxgym.com Climbmax Gym already sports some of the finest indoor rock climbing in the Southwest, and it’s not finished. Opening fully in September, it’s a workout for beginners and experts.
