East Valley nightspots Skybar at the Mondrian Scottsdale and The Sets in Tempe recently launched new events to attract clubgoers on those slower weeknights.

Skybar, a swanky bar inside the Mondrian Scottsdale, is filled with people in their 20s to 40s during Havana Tuesdays, a weekly Cuban-inspired club night.

Havana Tuesday at Skybar kicks off next door at resort restaurant Asia de Cuba, which has its own Cuban-inspired bar menu and Bacardi drink specials from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

But the weekly Cuban-inspired club night kicks into high gear later with Latin jams by five-piece band Rakata Project. Those who aren’t dancing lounge in the black-and-white striped cabanas on the large patio, or mingle inside drinking mojitos or caipirinhas.

“It’s nice to have something fun like this to go and do on a Tuesday night,” says Harold Margarv, a 40-year-old Scottsdale resident. “I love the flavor here: I feel like I’m relaxing in an island bar. It’s hard not to get caught up in the atmosphere.”

KEDJ (103.9 FM) radio personality Larry Mac hosts a weekly alt-rock night Wednesdays at The Sets, which attracts a hipster/punk/rock crowd in their 20s and 30s.

Mac works his way through the packed patio taking requests from the crowd full of men and women with mohawaks, tattoos and T-shirts promoting bands or liquor products. A young man slips Mac a napkin with an eclectic list of requests, including Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Dropkick Murphys and Social Distortion.

“The music is all across the board,” says Chrissy Byers, 24, of Chandler, between sips of a Heineken. “And people in Tempe love their music. It’s nice to have a cool place to chill and listen to good tunes. I can’t think of a better place to spend a Wednesday night.”

Havana Tuesdays is 6 p.m. to midnight at the Mondrian Scottsdale, 7353 E. Indian School Road. Free. (480) 444-0549 or mondrianscottsdale.com.

Larry Mac hosts an alt-rock night at 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesdays at The Sets, 93 E. Southern Ave., Tempe. Free. (480) 894-8339 or thesets.com.
