Bartenders pour cocktails for a group of guys at South Beach Restaurant and Lounge, which is more restaurant than lounge, on a busy weekend night.

The scene: We don’t feel like we’re in Miami, but there’s no denying that north Scottsdale’s new nightclub is ultra-hip. It’s filled with couples and small groups in their 20s to 50s on a recent Wednesday night. The majority of the restaurant’s staff is attired in black and beautiful (a spiky-haired server catches our eye), bustling around the restaurant and lounge’s vast space.

Beautiful decorative mirrors hang on the walls and there are several flat-screen TVs for those around the bar to watch a game. There are also two patios equipped with heat lamps.

The menu: The wine list features 140 bottle selections and wines by the glass. There are also fruit-infused mojitos and caipirinhas as well as a selection of martinis. The food offerings include steak (Australian lamb chops, Cubano flat iron), seafood (twin lobster tails, macadamia-crusted halibut), house specialties (stuffed pork chop, eggplant Parmesan) and pasta (penne ala vodka, black ink linguini). The massive menu also includes pizzas, sandwiches, wraps, salads and burgers.

The music: The lounge hosts live rock ’n’ roll cover bands 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Fridays and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

Happy hour: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily with half-price well cocktails, drafts, wine by the glass and appetizers. Reverse happy hour is 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. daily with half-price selected sushi, Three Olives cocktails and cosmos.

The verdict: South Beach is more restaurant than lounge. With its mellow vibe it’s a good place to kick off the evening, but we’re doubtful that people are going to stay here until close on those weekend nights.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday
