The downtown Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art lures hundreds of younger people to its evening mixers. The latest is “Yin Yang Fridays,” a monthly series of after-work soirees offering either yoga or jazz music.

Yin meets yang on Fridays at SMoCA

By all accounts, the Scottsdale Museum for Contemporary Art’s thrice-annual SMoCA Nights events have been a smashing success.

Hundreds of people, with plenty in the hipster set, flock to the vibrant museum mixers that run 9 p.m. to midnight. (The next is in March.) But Alexandra Parker, SMoCA’s director of development, says she’s been fielding requests for something a little more chill. Something earlier in the evening.

And, Parker admits, “minus the really loud music.”

Hence the birth of Yin Yang Fridays, dueling monthly after-work events offering yoga and healthy snacks (Yin) or, alternately, more traditional drinks-and-jazz fare (Yang). “It’s a play off the opposites-attracting thing,” Parker says, “and doing both ways of relaxing.”
The first Yin will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18.

The theme, riffing on the current “Car Culture” exhibit, finds yoga instructors leading patrons on — ahem — “alignment” of the body. A naturopathic physician, Parker says, “will offer tips on what to do with your body when stuck in traffic.” Gallery discussions and tea and snacks courtesy of Scottsdale’s Mandala Tea Room will also be provided.

“I’m 36, and I guess I’m just a nerd,” Parker says. “I had done the club thing and the partying-all-night thing, and I’m really tired on Friday and Saturday nights!” She laughs. “This is a way for people who don’t want to go to a nightclub to still have a good time.”

It’s also, she adds, a nice way to check out the art museum after work.

>> "Yin Yang Fridays" starts 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, 7374 E. Second St. $35, $25 for members. Reservations recommended. (480) 874-4612 or smoca.org.
