RIDE 'EM: Diners can watch would-be cowhands take turns riding the mechanical bull at Saddle Ranch Chop House in Scottsdale.

Saddle Ranch is a hard habit to break

The scene: A mechanical bull takes center stage at downtown Scottsdale’s Saddle Ranch Chop House, where a crowd of people are hooting and hollering, cheering a bride-to-be as she tries to master the art of bull riding.

She lasts about a minute before the gyrating sensation springs her off onto the cushy floor.

Although the mechanical bull is the star of the restaurant and bar, Saddle Ranch isn’t all country. It’s also part rock ’n’ roll, like its counterpart on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” is playing on two large screens. Wagon wheels and old West memorabilia decorate the walls.

Male servers wearing bandanas (a la Poison’s Bret Michaels) and cowboy hats busily move around the restaurant. Outside, there’s a large patio with heat lamps and a fire pit — and a line out the door usually on weekends after 10 p.m.

The crowd varies, depending on when you go. On a recent Saturday at 11 p.m., the bar is slammed with a see-and-be-seen 21-to-35-year-old crowd.

The menu: The menu is massive with options such as steaks, prime rib, seafood, chicken, chops, burgers, sandwiches, wraps and four kinds of macaroni and cheese, including a selection with crab. There’s also a handful of specialty cocktails such as the potent Texas Tea Party (Long Island with vodka, gin, rum, tequila, sweet and sour, triple sec and Coke). The specialty cocktails come in cool science lab-looking glasses. Saddle Ranch serves food until 2 a.m. nightly.

The music: A mix of rock videos from Guns ’N Roses, Plain White T’s, The Killers and Chris Cornell play on two large screens and several flat-screen TVs.

Happy hour: Two-for-one selected appetizers and cocktails 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Saturday.

The verdict: The Saddle Ranch is all about fun. It even has a bull-riding contest at 10 p.m. Mondays with cash prizes. I’ve been to the bar five times since it opened in mid-January and have no doubt that I’ll be back many more.
