SANDY HANGOUT: Patrons enjoy the beach bar atmosphere Saturday on the sandy patio at Guedo’s restaurant in Chandler.

The scene: The beach bar at Guedo’s Cantina Grill in downtown Chandler looks like something you would stumble across on the beach in Mexico — but the sandy surface that holds white plastic chairs and Corona-branded tables is a large sand-covered patio, not an actual beach.

There are straw-covered umbrellas, a string of Christmas lights that run across the small bar and a flat-screen TV showing an episode of “Two and a Half Men.”
Several heat lamps are blazing on this chilly night. An airplane constructed of Tecate cans hangs from the bar and a photo of a parrot holding a margarita that says “Polly want a cocktail?” hangs behind the bar.

Guedo Samora, the bartender and owner who constructed the beach bar, tells us they’re going to add island-style live music on Fridays at the end of the month.

The menu: Mexican food such as tacos, burros, cheese crisps and tortas along with Mexican beer and margaritas.

The music: Spanish music plays through speakers.

Happy hour: $2 featured Mexican beer, $4 margaritas and complimentary chips and warm bean dip 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays.

The verdict: Sun, sand and margaritas make for the ultimate day-drinking combination. The only thing missing is the surf. You’ll still feel like you’re in Mexico nonetheless.
