Stone Rose Lounge at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort and Cadillac Ranch at Tempe Marketplace are just getting started, but these four clubs that opened in the past year are taking the East Valley by storm. ![]() SAN FELIPES CANTINA For the college crowd seeking an alternative to Mill Avenue Since Tempe Marketplace debuted last year with its bevy of shopping, restaurant and nightlife options, Arizona State University students and others in their 20s have flocked to San Felipes Cantina for an alternative to the Mill Avenue scene. Megan Douglass (pictured), a recent ASU graduate chilling at the beach bar with a group of friends, says she loves the relaxed environment. “It’s a lot more laid-back here than a lot of the places on Mill,” says Douglass, 23, of Chandler. “I think this whole area is going to get a lot more popular. I can see this area becoming the new place to be.” “It’s something different to do other than Mill Avenue if you want to get away from that scene,” says Sam Villalobos, 24, of Tempe. “It’s something new to do and everybody is always looking for that new place to go to.” Information: 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, (480) 736-8226 or sanfelipescantina.com. ![]() SADDLE RANCH CHOPHOUSE For the rock ’n’ roll crowd Just like its counterpart on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, Saddle Ranch Chop House in downtown Scottsdale is a little bit country — but mostly rock ’n’ roll. Flat-screen projectors and TVs around the two-story restaurant and bar show hair metal videos from Bon Jovi, Guns ‘N Roses and Poison while people congregate around the star: a mechanical bull. On weekends, there’s a line out the door after 10 p.m. where a see-and-be-seen crowd awaits entry. “This is the hottest place in Scottsdale right now,” says David Sanchez, 34, of Scottsdale, wearing jeans, a vintage Mötley Crüe T-shirt and a cowboy hat while drinking a beer on the patio. “There is nothing like this in this city. It has that high-energy vibe,” Sanchez says. “And it has the people-watching factor. There’s so many hot girls here! And who doesn’t love seeing a hot girl ride a bull while Guns ‘N Roses is rocking out on the stereo?” Information: 4321 N. Scottsdale Road. Scottsdale. (480) 429-2263 or srrestaurants.com. ![]() TASTE ULTRA LOUNGE For the grown-ups who want to dance You’ll find a bit of everything at north Scottsdale’s Taste Ultra Lounge, where the cougars are always on the prowl. This chic night spot, inspired by the Tao nightclub at the Venetian resort in Las Vegas, attracts an array of clubgoers: young guys breakdancing on the dance floor, giddy groups of cleavage-bearing ladies, couples on dates. “There’s just such a diverse crowd,” says Tobin Daily (pictured, second from left), 29, of Phoenix, sipping a green Godzilla cocktail. “There’s all ages, all races and a great men-to-women ratio.” “I love that there’s such a wide mix of ages,” says Ellie Najafi, 31, of Scottsdale. “There’s a lot of clubs that cater to just one kind of crowd or a specific age, but here there’s everything.” Information: 6910 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, (480) 951-4466 or tasteultralounge.com. ![]() DOS GRINGOS MEXIGRILL For the anti-Scottsdale folks happy to wear a T-shirt and jeans Dos Gringos Mexigrill has given some Chandler residents a reason to stay in the city. “I hate going to Scottsdale,” says Holly Maghi, 25, of Chandler. “The scene is just so pretentious. There weren’t a lot of options out this way, but we’re finally starting to see more. I love Dos. You can come as you are. You don’t see that made-up thing with girls with their faces painted with makeup and guys in tight shirts trying too hard. ... It’s really a casual environment.” The colorful patio bar is usually packed on weekends, as people kick back with Coronas (the bar’s No. 1-selling brew) on couches on the patio or inside the bar.Ryan Jacobs says he appreciates the bar’s casual atmosphere. “There’s not really a dress code,” says Jacobs, 30, also of Chandler. “It’s nice to go to a place where I can just relax and enjoy a beer and not have to get all decked out to go out.” Information: 1361 N. Alma School Road, Chandler, (480) 855-3303 or dosgringosaz.com. |
