KICKING BACK: Walter Christopherson and Melissa Joens put salt in their beers while they enjoy the patio at Salty Señorita in Mesa.

Mesa’s Salty Señorita is cooler than Old Town Scottsdale’s

The scene: It’s not often Mesa beats Old Town Scottsdale in cool points, but when it comes to the Salty Señorita, Mesa wins hands down. Parking isn’t a challenge like it is in downtown Scottsdale. And the patio is a lot larger, making it easier to maneuver around the bar.

As for the pretty people you see in Scottsdale, they’re also at the Mesa hangout.

The beachlike cantina is packed with people on a recent weekday visit. And like its sister locations, the patio is where it’s at on this beautiful spring evening.

The bar screams “kick back,” from the faux palm trees out front to the bucket of beers being passed around throughout Salty’s. Colorful lights and neon Dos Equis buckets are strung along the patio’s ceiling.

The menu: Mexican eats such as street tacos, flautas, ceviche, quesadillas, burritos and taquitos fill the menu along with more sophisticated fare such as the grilled mahi-mahi and chicken de la señorita. Be sure to try the tableside guacamole. It’s the best guacamole I’ve had in the Valley aside from Tempe’s Mucho Gusto.

Cocktails range from fruity margaritas (peach, strawberry) to Mexican beer. The peach marg is too sweet for my liking, so I suggest trying the strawberry, which isn’t as sweet, if you want to mix it up. Salty’s is also one of a few places still carrying my beloved Miller Chill (a limey beer perfect for a beach bar).

The music: The soothing sounds of Bob Marley play softly out of speakers during my visit.

Happy hour: Food and drink specials 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

The verdict: When it comes to Salty’s, we’d rather hang in Mesa than in Scottsdale any day due to the larger size of this bar. If you like margs and patios — and let’s face it, who doesn’t? — be sure to head to Salty’s for a slice of beach life.
