GET OUT
The faces are bright, cartoony and expressive.
There's “Chef Alamode,” a figure with a blue hat and thin-line mustache who appears to be French, and “Help,” a pink-faced man with huge green eyes. “Night Boy” has red eyes that betray his lack of sleep, while catty “Yer Baby” winks at you against a checkered backdrop.
You're looking at the pop art of former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, on display at Rock Star Gallery in north Scottsdale. The musician-turned-contemporary-artist began creating the giclee prints as a way to pass the hours while touring, says the gallery's owner, Michael Dunn.
“He quit partying years ago, and he needed something to keep him busy when he went out on tour,” Dunn says. “He would stay in his room and started making this art on his computer.”
Starr has created 14 different images, and has produced 100 copies of each, which are all hand-signed. Dunn says. Rock Star Gallery recently acquired a complete set of number 65 of the prints.
Dunn says he believes rock fans feel a connection to their favorite musicians through their visual art — “The fan gets it.”
Starr has donated all proceeds from his art to the nonprofit Lotus Foundation.
