Cheap eats at Mi Amigos are easy on the wallet

Get Out

The spot: Mi Amigos Mexican Grill, 1264 S. Gilbert Road, Mesa

Happy hour: 3 to 6 p.m. daily; 9 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday

The vibe: We're greeted by an un-perky hostess on a late Saturday afternoon. When we ask where to sit for happy hour, she snaps, ‘‘Sit wherever you want’’ before telling us it would be best to sit at the bar. Aside from this incident, the Mi Amigos vibe is pleasant. The restaurant and bar are colorful and festively decorated. Balloons hang from various corners of the restaurant and families and couples dine together. The food deals: $1.50 bean dip, $1.68 bean tostada, cheese enchilada and beef taco, $1.98 bean burro, $2.25 cheese crisp and quesadilla, $4.13 mini chimi platter with sour cream.

The drink deals: $2 lime house margaritas (on the rocks or frozen), 20-ounce grande Dos XX cerveza draft and cerveza bottle, $2.25 shot of Cuervo Gold tequila, $2.38 shot of 1800 tequila, $2.75 strawberry frozen margarita.

The review: There really isn't anything wrong with the cheese enchiladas that we order. They're oozing with cheese and the sauce is tasty, but they don't hold a candle to our favorites at Mango's in downtown Mesa. However, the ones at Mango's aren't nearly as cheap as the Mi Amigos’ dish, so we can't really complain. The beef taco — which is packed with shredded cheese, beef and lettuce — is greasy and crunchy. We savor every bite. The lime margarita, which tastes like a sweet treat, is pretty sour and hard to finish. Next time, we'll opt for the strawberry margarita.

The inside scoop:
The fried ice cream — three scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with strawberry, caramel and chocolate syrup — is to die for, so make sure you leave room. It's not a happy hour special, but it's worth the $3.95 price tag.
