Get Out
The spot: Crabby Dons Bar & Restaurant, 3861 E. Baseline Road, Gilbert
Happy hour: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday
The vibe: When we get to Crabby Don's on a Tuesday evening, we don't find anyone fitting the description. The small bar and restaurant, which is located on the southeast corner of Val Vista and Baseline roads, is pretty dead. A group of guys in their early 20s sit in one corner of the bar, while a few couples in their 30s and 40s are spread out among the bar. ‘‘Sweet Home Alabama’’ is playing in the background.
The food deals: Half-off appetizers, excluding anything with seafood.
The drink deals: $2.75 domestic drafts.
The review: The menu says the fried macaroni and cheese ($3) isn't your mom's mac ’n’ cheese. Boy, is that an accurate statement! The dish is served as an appetizer and there is no macaroni to be found. It's basically several pieces of plump, fried cheddar cheese. They taste delicious, but we would never call it mac ’n’ cheese. The chicken quesadilla ($3) is packed with veggies, but unfortunately comes with an abundance of peppers, which don't sit well in our stomachs. Even though it's not a happy hour deal, we try the Crabby Don dip ($6.95), which is our favorite item. The large order of dip is served with a hearty amount of tortilla chips. The dip is amazing.
The inside scoop: Crabby Don's offers ladies $1.50 domestic bottles Thursdays during their ladies night.
