‘Gee spot’ disappoints with tame scene, average food

Get Out

The spot: Johnny Gee's Sports Bar & Grill, 7200 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler

Happy hour: 3 to 7 p.m. daily

The vibe: We're curious to see what lies inside this strip mall bar after reading the sign, which says “home of the gee spot” under the bar's name. Alas, nothing kinky going on here. The scene is tame and the rundown bar looks a little divey. There are a few dart boards, pool tables, a few large TVs showing a D-Backs game and a small stage for live music. On this particular Friday, about 15 to 20 people sip from large mugs of beer and sit at tables with various baseball cards encased in the tops.

The food deals: Half off appetizers

The drink deals: $2.25 well, wine, domestic bottles and drafts

The review: The food is mediocre at best. You can rarely go wrong with fried mozzarella and potato skins — two bar staples — and Johnny Gee's didn't disappoint, but it didn't exceed our expectations either. The potato skins are loaded with cheese, chives and bacon bits and come with a side of sour cream, while the fried cheese sticks come with a side of marinara sauce. We certainly won't be driving back to Chandler for the food, and the bar's ho-hum atmosphere didn't leave us yearning for more of this “gee spot.”

The inside scoop: The bar offers $2 you-call-its from 9 p.m. to midnight Thursdays.
