Huckleberry margaritas are treat at Roaring Fork

Get Out

The spot: Roaring Fork, 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale

Happy hour: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday

The vibe: Considering it's a Monday, the Roaring Fork is packed. About 50 people mill inside or by the patio of the posh bar's saloon area, where happy hour is offered. The crowd is comprised mainly of professionals in their 30s to 60s. It's slammed inside so we opt to sit on the patio at an umbrella-covered table. Mellow elevator-type music is playing softly through a stereo speaker.

The food deals: Discounted appetizers include $7 green chile pork stew, chicken wings, Frito pie, flat tortilla sandwich, fish tacos and pulled pork sammy; $7.50 rotisserie-roasted half-chicken and Big Ass Burger; $8 barbecue pork ribs.

The drink deals: $2 domestic bottles; $3 well drinks; $3.50 margaritas and huckleberry margaritas; $5 select wine.

The review: We start with a refreshing huckleberry margarita because our server promises we'll “be in for a treat.’’ She's right. The frozen berry-flavored margarita is delicious, especially in the 90-degree heat. The tasty Frito pie — chili and melted cheddar over an open bag of Fritos — is not something you would expect to find on the menu of a fine restaurant. The fish tacos, which are our favorite dish, come in an order of two large flour tacos. They're packed with catfish and shredded cabbage and come with a side of spicy chipotle mayo. We love the flavorful tacos, which aren't too spicy.
