Mexi-Kenny’s is mediocre
By KELLY WILSON
Get Out
The spot: Mexi-Kenny’s Mexican Grill, 1455 W. Elliot Road, Gilbert
Happy hour: 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday
The vibe: Mexi-Kenny's is pretty empty aside from two small groups of people when we stop into the restaurant on an early Friday evening. Colorful artwork decorates the walls while strings of bright lights illuminate the eatery.
The food deals: $2.99 appetizers
The drink deals: $2.50 beer and wine; $2.99 margaritas
The review: After placing our order at the counter, a bus boy brings over a side of warm chips and zesty salsa. Our food comes out no more than 10 minutes later. Though we appreciate the speedy service, we can’t say the same about the food. The three items we try are mediocre at best and don’t warrant a return trip to this Gilbert grill. The nachos — corn chips covered in refried beans, melted cheese, chicken, guacamole and sour cream — are blah and overloaded with beans. And the cheese almost seems rubbery. The cheese crisp, melted cheese on a flour tortilla, is OK. It’s very light, which doesn’t make for the greatest item to split. The crispy mini chimis, which are packed with shredded chicken, are the highlight of this food experience. They come in a small order of four with a side of sour cream and guacamole.
The inside scoop: Although the food isn’t anything to brag about, we highly recommend the margaritas. The strawberry one — a very large frozen margarita with a sugar-rimmed glass — is delicious and just what the doctor ordered after a long week of holiday craziness.
