Pizza, Gold Digger wow at crowded Sugar Daddy’s
By KELLY WILSON
Get Out

The spot: Sugar Daddy’s, 3102 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale

Happy hour: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday
The vibe: We’re surprised when we pull into the Sugar Daddy’s parking lot at 6 p.m. Friday and are forced to park in a sketchy, dirt spot because the bar is packed. We’re used to this on a weekend at midnight but not early in the evening. Also, unlike the weekend nights, a mix of ages — 20- to 60-somethings — congregate at the New Orleans-style restaurant and bar. Sugar Daddy’s is decorated with colorful holiday decorations and lights everywhere. The bar's massive patio clearly is the preferred spot to mingle over cocktails and appetizers.

The food deals: Half off select appetizers

The drink deals:
$2 Red Stripe, $2 Smirnoff Ice and $3 Finlandia Vodka and Southern Comfort drinks

The review: We’re not impressed with our first two food items — the queso dip and lettuce wraps. The thick smoked cheddar cheese dip ($2.50), which comes with lots of tortilla chips, has a slight kick. Although it looks good, it has a bad aftertaste. The lettuce wraps ($4) come with more lettuce than chicken, which is a downer. The lettuce is fresh and makes a nice shell for our seasoned, diced chicken, but we’re only able to make a few wraps with the small amount of filling. The Margherite pizza ($5) — a blend of basil, aged olive oil, roma tomatoes and various cheeses — stands out. The golden pizza bubbles with cheese and practically melts in our mouths. We’re looking forward to ordering this again. Since we’re in Scottsdale, we can’t resist splitting a dessert called the Gold Digger ($5) — fried ice cream and amaretto cheesecake covered in raspberry coulis, chocolate ganache and a Jack Daniels caramel sauce. The rich treat is heavenly and we're scared to think how many calories it has.

The inside scoop: The bar features live music nightly from blues to rock and offers a $12 all-you-can-eat brunch buffet with a $4 build-your-own Bloody Mary bar on Sundays.
