Get must-have margaritas at Z Tejas' happy hour
By KELLY WILSON
Get Out
The spot: Z Tejas Grill, 20 W. Sixth St., Tempe
Happy hour: 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
The vibe: Everyone from college students dining with their parents to couples and professionals are enjoying happy hour on an early Friday evening. Outside, the patio is hopping as a crowd of people in their 20s and 30s relax in the unusually breezy weather.
The food deals: Half-off appetizers
The drink deals: $1 off margaritas, draft beer, well drinks and wine
The review: We're shocked at how fast our food is served, given the full restaurant and bar. We should have steered clear of the Seared Sesame Ahi Tuna ($4.25). The dish, which is served rare with black peppercorn vinaigrette and spicy soy mustard, is extremely spicy. Luckily, the spiciness wears off pretty quickly, but we were hesitant to finish the remaining pieces. The crab cakes ($4.98) are crisp and delicious. The Tejas Trio ($3.97) is our favorite item — salty tortilla chips and a hearty side of chili con queso, salsa picante and guacamole. This cheesy appetizer is a must-have during happy hour. We also ordered a frozen Chambord margarita ($5.75), which was so strong it was hard to finish. Luckily, we're experts at this. The inside scoop: You can't go to Z Tejas without ordering a margarita. It's like going to Disneyland without riding It's a Small World. Because these specialities are so potent (a 14-ounce margarita is loaded with four shots of tequila), the restaurant limits patrons to just three of the drinks, which come in flavors such as Chambord, strawberry, mango, peach, apple and prickly pear.
