New piano bar is causing Big Bang

Fans of singalong piano are getting down on Mill Avenue — literally.

Down a flight of stairs, beneath the popular Library Bar & Grill on the southeast corner of Mill and Fifth Avenue, the Valley's newly opened Big Bang piano bar is already a hit.

Dueling piano players perform nightly at the club, formerly Beeloe's, and nearly everyone sings along. On a recent Tuesday night, the two pianists — one male, one female — led a crowd of about 100 in renditions of Steppenwolf's ‘‘Born to Be Wild,’’ the Eagles’ ‘‘Hotel California’’ and Meat Loaf's ‘‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light.’’

“I've been looking for a nice piano bar for a long time,’’ says Tara Ritchie, 38, of Scottsdale. “I thought they would put one in Scottsdale before Tempe, but this is worth the drive.’’

Unlike its predecessor, the Big Bang does not serve food. Also gone is the colorful decor that Beeloe's was known for.

Still, the Valley hasn't had a singalong piano bar since Li’l Ditty's closed in downtown Phoenix.

“It's hard not to be intrigued by something like this,’’ says Victor Young, 22, of Tempe. “I can't believe there is a piano bar on Mill Avenue. This is really cool!’’
