Empty bowls lunch helps those in need

In conjunction with World Hunger Day, Mesa Community College (1833 W. Southern Ave.) will host the 13th annual empty bowls lunch on Wednesday.

For $10, people can choose from more than 2,000 bowls. The bowls will be filled with soup and served with bread — a simple lunch by American standards but a feast to many others in the world. Those bowls not selected are intended to serve as a reminder of those in the community who are still hungry.

The afternoon will also include a silent auction featuring bowls designed and signed by local artists.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Paz de Cristo Community Center, a Mesa-based interfaith ministry that serves hot meals daily to those in need. The center feeds more than 200 people each night.
The event takes place 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in MCC's Navajo Room. Cost: $10. Info:
