Saget leaves family-friendly comedy behind for Improv gig By KELLY WILSON

When people see Bob Saget perform stand-up for the first time, the actor and comedian says their initial reaction is: “What happened to Mr. Tanner?” “A lot of people are shocked,” says Saget of his R-rated comedy, probably because he's still best known for his portrayal of straight-edge dad Danny Tanner on ABC's “Full House” for eight years.
“Most of the time, people are laughing really hard the first five to 10 minutes because of the shock factor ... I do consider myself to be one of the funnier people around but you would never know that from (“America's Funniest Home Videos,” which he once hosted). It was family dinner hour. You can't grab your crotch and scream at 7 p.m. on a Sunday night.’’
Saget says he has two loyal fans in the Olsen twins, who teamed up to portray his youngest daughter Michelle on “Full House.” “They love my comedy,” Saget, 48, says. “They come out a lot to see me perform.”
The comic, who has three daughters aged 11, 14 and 17 and has been divorced for seven years, returns that support to the twins. In fact, he recently attended their high school graduation.
“It's very strange considering that I held those girls when they were 9 months old,” he says of watching the Olsens grow up.
When asked if he offered the teenage millionaires any fatherly advice when they turned 18 last month and received an estimated $300 million between them, Saget says, “No.”
“They're not regular people,” he says. “When you're given power and people defer to you at any age and if you're very young and people look at you in a certain way, it changes you as a person. I don't give advice to anybody. With my kids, I sit down and talk to them like they're people and I'll say, ‘You're not doing that.’ I can't say that to the Olsen girls. My advice is kind of through osmosis.”
In addition to keeping in touch with the Olsen twins, Saget says he speaks with other cast members of “Full House” frequently and stresses that they're very close.
“I was in Vegas with John Stamos a couple of weeks ago,” he says of the actor who played Uncle Jesse on the show and recently split with wife Rebecca Romijn-Stamos. “We were just kind of getting into trouble. What are you going to do? We're single men. My girlfriend broke up with me so he was my buddy, my commiserating pain partner.’’
Although Saget — who recently guest-starred on Showtime's “Huff” and is developing a WB series — has succeeded in everything from acting to directing to stand-up, he says that he doesn't feel like he's conquered anything yet.
“Conquering stuff for me is being able to pick up the phone and get the movie made that you want to get made,’’ he says. “I'm closer to that now because more people are interested. A lot of the stuff that I'm going to be doing in the next 10 years is the stuff that I think I will be remembered for.”
