Get Out
As if one needed another reason to visit Sedona besides the town itself, there's the 10th Annual Sedona International Film Festival and Workshop, kicking off this weekend with an expanded slate of top-notch independent films.
Recently ranked in the top 20 by the Wall Street Journal out of 845 festivals in the United States, Sedona has added a day to its traditional three-day format, beginning Thursday and running through Sunday, at the Harkins Sedona 6 and the Zaki Gordon Institute. For its 10th anniversary, the festival has dispensed with the traditional diamonds and gone with stars: Brad Renfro (“The Client"), Laura Heuring (“Mulholland Drive") and others will be on hand to talk about their films.
A list of some of the top feature- length offerings follow. For more detailed screening information, including dozens of short subject films and information about the many workshops and discussion groups, visit the Web site at www. sedonafilmfestival.com.
"Dogville": The festival's most high-profile offering features Nicole Kidman as a beautiful fugitive harbored by the denizens of a small town, including Paul Bettany (“A Knight's Tale") and Lauren Becall. Lars von Trier directs. (11 a.m. Fri., 6:30 p.m. Sat.)
"Lesser Evil": After whacking a pair of bullies, four boys grow into men and are forced to confront their crimes. Starring Colm Feore and David Payner. (2:30 p.m. Thu., noon Fri.)
"The Mummy an' the Armadillo": A roadside diner in the American Southwest provides the mise en scene for this quirky character study. Laura Heuring stars. (4:30 p.m. Thu., 6:15 p.m. Fri.)
"Never Get Out of the Boat": Producer John Cusack offers this bonding tale about three Hollywood hosiers who befriend one another in a drug treatment facility. (7 p.m. Thu., 10 p.m. Fri.)
"Word Wars": Documentary film about the high-pressure, high-stakes world of Scrabble tournaments. (1 p.m. Fri., 8:15 p.m. Sat., 9 a.m. Sun.)
"Virgin": Raped while unconscious, a woman (Robin Wright Penn) believes she is carrying the messiah, sending a small town into spirals of anger and denial. (8:15 p.m. Thu., 10:15 a.m. Sat.)
